[LEGT] GETAFE

Getafe Air Base is a military air base located in Getafe, 14 km south of Madrid.

The facilities, located 620 m above sea level, have a single landing and take-off runway 3.06 km long. It is one of the first air bases in Spain and where Juan de la Cierva flew the first autogyro.

This air base was established permanently in 1911 (20 years before Barajas), and two years later the Civil Aviation School was created. Since then, its expansions and reforms have taken place, until today.

Nowadays, apart from military use, the factory that belonged to CASA and is currently part of the European group Airbus is located next to the base, and next to a railway line, it often uses its facilities to bring parts of Airbus that Airbus Spain builds there. The Eurofighters destined for Spain are assembled in an adjacent facility. The civil traffic that the base registers is scarce, its main and majority use being for military air operations.

Airbus also carries out maintenance on various Air Force and Space Force aircraft in the facilities attached to the base, as well as improvement and modernization programs for these aircraft, using the air base runway for this purpose.
